All Information About Tadoba National Park

What is Tadoba?
Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve is one of India’s most prominent tiger reserves, located in the Vidarbha region of eastern Maharashtra. It is among the oldest protected forests in the country and is known for its thriving population of Royal Bengal Tigers.
Spread across approximately 3,750 sq. km, the reserve includes both core and buffer zones and offers multiple entry gates for safari access. It lies in Chandrapur district, about 30 km from Chandrapur city and around 155 km from Nagpur, which is the nearest airport.
The name “Tadoba” comes from a local tribal deity, Taru (or Tadoba), while “Andhari” refers to the Andhari River that flows through the forest and sustains its ecosystem.

If you are traveling from Mumbai, the best way is to reach Nagpur first.

  • By Flight: Take an early morning flight reaching Nagpur before 9:00 AM so you can enjoy an afternoon safari the same day.
  • By Train: Popular options include Duronto Express, Vidarbha Express, and Sevagram Express.
From Nagpur, Tadoba is around 3–4 hours by road. Private vehicles like SUVs are easily available. On the way, you can enjoy local specialties like Saoji cuisine.
There is no single “best” gate, but Moharli Gate is considered one of the most convenient.
  • Located near Telia Lake, a major water source attracting wildlife
  • Higher chances of tiger sightings, especially in summer
  • Good number of safari vehicles available
  • Wide range of resorts and accommodations nearby
Other good gates include Kolara and Navegaon.
From Pune, you can travel to Nagpur by:
  • Flights: Early morning IndiGo flights are ideal
  • Trains: Options like Azad Hind Express, Garib Rath, and others
You can also get down at Wardha if convenient. From Nagpur or Wardha, road travel to Tadoba is easy.
Visitors from Kolkata can take trains to Nagpur such as Gitanjali Express, Karmabhoomi Express, and others.
Once you reach Nagpur, road transport can be arranged to reach Tadoba comfortably.
Yes, safari bookings should ideally be done well in advance (around 60–65 days).
  • Early booking ensures better safari zones
  • Last-minute bookings may result in higher costs or limited availability
You will need valid ID proof (like Aadhaar) for booking.
You can choose from different packages based on your budget:
  • Budget stays with basic facilities
  • Deluxe packages (including government resorts like MTDC)
  • Luxury resorts with premium amenities
  • Jungle cottage stays (with strict eco-rules)
Most packages include stay, meals, safari, and transportation.
Tadoba is situated in eastern Maharashtra’s Vidarbha region, mainly in Chandrapur district. It is the largest forest area in the state and a key destination for wildlife tourism.
  • From Nagpur: ~155 km (3–4 hours drive)
  • From Chandrapur: ~35 km
Nagpur is the most preferred entry point due to better connectivity via flights and trains.
Accommodation options are mainly around Moharli and nearby gates:
  • Government-run MTDC resort near the lake
  • Private resorts and homestays
  • Luxury wildlife resorts

Most places offer comfortable stays with local cuisine.

Apart from tigers, you may spot:
The park is also excellent for birdwatching.
  • Core Zone: Central forest area with no human settlements and higher safari fees
  • Buffer Zone: Surrounding forest with some villages; slightly cheaper safaris
Interestingly, recent sightings show strong tiger movement in buffer zones as well.
  • Nov–March: Pleasant weather
  • Apr–June: Hot but best for sightings near water sources
  • Monsoon (Jul–Sep): Core closed, buffer open
Wildlife sightings depend more on luck than season.
Recent estimates suggest 150+ tigers in and around the reserve, making it one of the best places in India for tiger sightings.
Gate selection is less important than:
  • Experienced guide
  • Skilled driver
  • Your luck on that day
Moharli, Kolara, and Navegaon are popular choices.
Nagpur is the most convenient railway station, especially for visitors heading to Moharli or nearby zones.
Yes, safaris are completely safe if you follow forest rules:
  • Do not step out of the vehicle
  • Follow guide instructions
  • Maintain silence and discipline

Timings may vary slightly depending on the season.
Tadoba offers one of the highest chances in India (often 80–90%), but sightings are never guaranteed—they depend on luck.
Some luxury resorts offer swimming pools, but many forest-side accommodations focus more on nature than luxury amenities.
  • Winter: Cool (can drop to 8–10°C)
  • Summer: Very hot (up to 45°C+)
